Background
This experiment is an attempt to create a yeast starter, or “bug,” by capturing the natural yeast on carrot peels. The starter will be fed sugar and water over the course of a week to cultivate a population strong enough for carbonation.

23g Cane Sugar
750g Water
Equipment
Glass Jar
Kitchen Scale
Instructions
-
Combine
Add the carrot peels, sugar, and water to a jar. -
Cover
Cover the jar lightly. -
Ferment
Leave at room temperature for 24 hours before the first feeding. -
Feed
Feed the starter daily for one week with 10g carrot peels and 10g sugar.
Notes and Observations
- The goal is to create a yeast starter from the carrot peels for future carbonation projects.
- The mixture will be covered lightly and left for 24 hours, after which it will be fed daily.
- After 5 days, this was VERY active. Leaving it overnight, the popping sound from the jar hurt my eardrums.
