Spicebush

Spicebush is a native shrub at the northern edge of its range in Maine. It has aromatic leaves, twigs, bark, and red fall berries; the berries are sometimes used as a local spice.¹

Spicebush is dioecious: male and female flowers occur on separate plants, so both are needed for berry production.¹

The red berries can be dried and ground as a local allspice-like seasoning; leaves, twigs, and bark are aromatic as well.¹

In Maine it is considered uncommon and favors protected, evenly moist sites. Its presence is therefore more local and particular than that of common garden herbs.¹
